Second Graders Reenact and Reflect on the Immigrant Experience

May 24, 2019

Last week, 2nd Graders culminated their unit on immigration with a performance and Ellis Island simulation in the Broad Street Ballroom. The students, who have been studying the challenges that many faced in coming to this country through Ellis Island in the late 19th and early 20th century, reenacted a typical day at the former port of entry into the United States. Students participated in experiential learning as they rotated through three inspection stations: legal, mental, and medical, just as some of their ancestors did at the turn of the century. They also presented songs and writing about what they learned in this unit to their parents and peers.
