April was Arab Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the diverse culture, heritage, and contributions of people across the Arab diaspora throughout history.
Throughout the month, our community came together in several ways to commemorate this time of heritage, history, and culture. Read on to learn more.
Celebrating the Diversity of Arab Cuisine
To celebrate the breadth and diversity of Arab cuisine, students in the Muslim Student Union (MSU) organized a fun potluck, sharing a variety of dishes including kibbeh, sabanekh, namoura, and more with the Léman community.
Moroccan Tea Ceremony
Fourth and fifth graders learned about one of Morocco’s oldest customs during a Moroccan tea ceremony led by CECE and Lower School French Teacher, Ms. Welch. Throughout, Ms. Welch taught students about the significance of the ceremony in Moroccan culture, and walked them through how to make traditional mint tea step by step.
The tea, which was made with fresh mint from Ms. Welch’s garden, was enjoyed by all!
Learning About Gnawa Music
During two upper school lunch periods, the Grammy-nominated Moroccan musician Samir Langus and his band, visited 1 Morris Street to perform Gnawa, the traditional, spiritual music of Morocco’s Black communities for Léman students, faculty, and staff.
