Dear Léman Manhattan Families,
I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge this challenging time for our country. With the most recent event of the murder of George Floyd, we have reached a tipping point from the many unjust actions against black and brown Americans. Many individuals across our community are suffering - students, faculty, staff and families. As a white woman, I cannot begin to completely understand what it means and feels like to be a person of color in America today.
I want you to know that as the Head of School at a diverse and inclusive learning community, I am outraged. Both personally and professionally, I feel that we have a responsibility to take a stand and be a force of positive change. Personally, I will use my privilege to make change towards racial justice and equity. We, as a community, will work together to find ways to help our students express their feelings about what is happening and ways to take action. Many people in our community have already reached out to students to check in and acknowledge their struggle.
It is important that we check in on all members of our community and my thoughts are with anyone struggling during this time. Know that I am here to engage in conversation and am open to any and all suggestions related to how our community can make a difference.
Léman's mission has always been to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment, build student advocacy and educate global citizens of the world through knowledge, collaboration and compassion. There has never been a more important time for our entire community to remain committed to creating change through the education of young people.
I am working closely with Lakiya Burrell, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator, who will be sharing resources that can be used by families across academic divisions to help support and address current circumstances. She is also available to meet with individuals interested in discussing proactive steps.
I am here for you. You matter!
