Students Observe a Day in the Life of the Hudson and East Rivers

This fall, Environmental Systems and Societies classes participated in the 16th year of "A Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor" along with over 90 other students from schools up and down the Hudson, from Staten Island to Albany. Sponsored by Columbia University's Earth Observatory and the New York State DEC, our students collected data on several parameters using the same protocols and procedures as the other schools. The result is a shared data set that presents a "snapshot" of the State of the River on that day. Scientists can then access data going back 16 years to study longer term changes to aspects of water quality like salinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, water speed and depth, as well as fish and other wildlife living by the harbor's teeming shores.
