Léman Celebrates Jewish Heritage Month

May marks Jewish Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the diverse culture, heritage, and contributions of Jewish people across the diaspora throughout history.

Throughout this month, our community enjoyed different celebrations and events that brought us together to learn and grow throughout this commemorative time. Read on to learn more.

The Read Aloud Club & Jewish Student Union Read Books at 41 Broad Street
Throughout the year, upper school students in the Read Aloud Club visit their younger peers to share a variety of books that touch on each of our DEIJ celebrations. This month, they teamed up with the Jewish Student Union to share children's books that highlight a global reflection of Jewish culture and history. One story they shared was “The Matzo Ball Boy,” by Lisa Shulman. 

Musical Performance
As a way to learn about Jewish music, upper schoolers were treated to a live musical performance by Upper and Lower School Music Teacher Mr. Carr, Upper School Social Studies Teacher Mr. Potter, and ninth grade parent Paul Shapiro. Throughout their lunchtime performances, students learned about the diversity of Jewish musical traditions and more.

The 2024 Jewish Food Festival
On Wednesday, May 24th, students, families, faculty, and staff gathered in the 1 Morris Street cafe for the 2024 Léman Jewish Food Festival! Hosted by members of the Upper School Jewish Student Union, this gastronomic event brought our community together to enjoy the vastness of Jewish cuisine through samplings of kugel, pastrami, challah bread, and more – all generously prepared by several Léman families!
