Say hello to your 2023 ISAL Cross Country Champions!
Congratulations are to our Girls Varsity and Grades 7/8 Cross Country teams, who both recently came in first place at the Independent School Athletic League (ISAL) Cross Country Championships. Taking place at Van Cortlandt Park, the season-end meet had athletes competing against teams from Avenues, Brooklyn Friends, Dwight, and more.
All season long, student athletes worked incredibly hard, resulting in their running shoes “accumulating over 100 miles,” as noted by Cross Country Coach, Ms. Molina. Their efforts paid off in spades, resulting in the first-ever year our Girls Cross Country teams took home the gold in both the Varsity and Middle School ISAL cross country divisions. Ranking in the ISAL Cross Country Championships is based on teams’ overall scores, which is determined by the times of each team’s top five runners (Middle School) or three lowest finishes (Varsity). The Girls Grades 7/8 team came in first with a team score of 41, while the Girls Varsity Team nabbed the “W” with a team score of 18. Special recognition went to Junior Blair W., who came in first overall for her category, finishing the 5K race with a 22:08 time.
In addition to our Girls teams, Ms. Molina coaches our Boys Varsity and Grades 7/8 teams as well. She noted that all season long, the collective team displayed incredible dedication and determination to the sport. “Throughout the season,” she started, “my runners have learned the harsh realities of physical and mental limitations. They experienced many aches and injuries but came out triumphant at the end. They learned that personal responsibility, commitment, sacrifice, determination, and persistence are the only means of improvement.”
With the 2023-24 cross country season now complete, we’re incredibly proud of our Cross Country teams and all they accomplished. To that sentiment, Ms. Molina mused, “I am passionate about coaching cross country, but I’m even more passionate about making cross country a fun and rewarding experience for my athletes. I am beyond proud of them. This is a season that I will not soon forget.”
