On Saturday, May 20th, twelve Léman students attended the Diversity Awareness Initiative for Students’s (DAIS) 2023 Multicultural Student Leadership Conference. Now in its 24th year, this full-day conference is held annually for students in Grades 8-12 from schools across the country, and features student-facilitated workshops that allow for future leaders to discuss and dissect a variety of topics related to social justice, equity, and making our world a better place for all.
Following the theme “You Are Enough: Protecting Your Peace,” this year’s conference showcased seminars on topics including the intersections of culture, religion, and spirituality, how the media represents marginalized groups, the perpetuation of gender roles (and how to dismantle them), and more. Throughout the conference, students were also able to take part in affinity group activities, as well as social opportunities that allowed them to bond with their peers from across the state.
It is the hope that the knowledge and experience Léman’s students gained at the DAIS Conference will increase their confidence in discussing important topics related to equity and justice and will continue to inspire them to take on leadership roles in fostering social justice and belonging at Léman wherever they may go.
